All of our surgical patents are intubated and maintained under general anesthesia with isoflourane, a safe inhalant anesthetic agent. Each patient is connected to an audible respiratory monitor at all times, which will sound an alarm as soon as there is any deviation in the patients normal breathing pattern. This ensures that the doctor and surgical technician can hear (as well as watch)that our patient is stable.
We also use a pulse oximeter to monitor heart rate and oxygenation. This helps assure us that our patient is receiving exactly the amount of anesthetic that is effective yet safe. Again, a loud alarm sounds if there is any deviation from normal.
